Ottawa and Federal Government Launch $400M Partnership to Accelerate Affordable Housing

The federal government and the city of Ottawa have announced a $400-million joint fund aimed at building up to 3,000 affordable homes in the capital. Ottawa will expedite construction by waiving development charges, permit fees, and property taxes, while the federal Build Canada Homes agency will finance 2,000 units on federally owned land. Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized that construction will begin quickly, with shovels expected in the ground next year. Further financial details will be outlined in a report to city council early in the new year.
Mayor Mark Sutcliffe highlighted Ottawa’s role as the first city to strike such a deal with Build Canada Homes, noting both governments will support each other’s efforts to increase affordable housing. The announcement came alongside additional economic initiatives, including a new task force led by retired general Rick Hillier to strengthen local defence-industry opportunities. Carney also pointed to a new Defence Innovation Hub strategy and confirmed federal funding for a pilot project addressing addiction issues in the city.
